Why Brain-Based Education Matters in Early Childhood

Lessons from a conversation with Black homeschool families about how young children learn, grow, and build strong foundations.


Parents make countless decisions about their children’s education, but some of the most important learning begins long before kindergarten. During the preschool years, children are developing language, attention, emotional regulation, confidence, relationships, and the habits that help them approach new experiences.


That is why the idea of brain-based education deserves more than a slogan.


In a recent Black Homeschool Podcast conversation, Blue Ribbon Results Academy’s Dr. Sheila Holas discussed the importance of understanding how young children learn. The conversation also raised a question that matters to families in every educational setting: How can we give children strong early-learning experiences while honoring their individual development, family identity, and natural curiosity?



Brain-based education begins with a simple principle: teaching should reflect what we know about children’s development. For preschoolers, that means learning cannot be separated from relationships, movement, communication, emotion, play, and meaningful repetition.


What Is Brain-Based Education?

A brain-based preschool program intentionally designs learning experiences around how young children develop and engage with the world. It does not mean pushing elementary-school work down to younger ages. It means giving children developmentally appropriate opportunities to explore, communicate, move, practice, make connections, and receive responsive support from caring adults.


The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University explains that early experiences help shape the brain’s developing architecture. Simple neural connections form first and provide a foundation for more complex learning later.

One important part of that process is what Harvard describes as “serve and return” interaction. A child gestures, speaks, points, asks a question, or expresses an emotion. A responsive adult notices and answers. These back-and-forth exchanges help strengthen communication, social development, and emotional well-being.


In a preschool classroom, brain-based learning may look like a teacher:

  • responding to a child’s question with another question that extends thinking;

  • combining music and movement with an early math or language concept;

  • revisiting an idea in several playful ways instead of relying on memorization alone;

  • helping children name emotions and practice calming strategies;

  • using stories, sensory experiences, conversation, and hands-on materials;

  • observing each child and adjusting the support or challenge as needed.

The purpose is not to make childhood more academic. It is to make learning more intentional, responsive, and meaningful.


Five Elements of a Brain-Based Preschool Experience


1. Responsive relationships come first

Children learn best when they feel safe enough to participate, make mistakes, ask questions, and try again. A dependable relationship with a caring educator helps create those conditions.

That relationship also helps teachers understand what a child is communicating through words and behavior. Instead of viewing every challenging moment as disobedience, an educator can consider whether the child needs language, practice with transitions, sensory support, rest, reassurance, or help regulating a strong emotion.


2. Movement and play are part of learning

Preschool children are active learners. They develop understanding by moving, touching, sorting, pretending, building, singing, talking, and experimenting.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children notes that playful learning can support development across learning domains while promoting children’s choice, curiosity, and enthusiasm. Purposeful play is not time away from learning. For young children, it is often the way important learning happens.


3. Meaningful repetition strengthens understanding

Young children benefit from encountering important ideas more than once and in more than one form. A new word might appear during a story, a song, a classroom conversation, and imaginative play. A math concept might be practiced with blocks, movement, pictures, and everyday routines.

This kind of repetition is active rather than mechanical. It gives children multiple opportunities to connect new information with something they already understand.


4. Social and emotional development supports academic learning

Early literacy and math matter, but children also need to practice waiting, listening, expressing needs, managing frustration, joining a group, solving problems, and recovering from mistakes.

These abilities help children participate in classroom learning and build relationships. A strong early-childhood program therefore treats cognitive, language, physical, social, and emotional development as connected—not as competing priorities.


5. Families are essential partners

Parents and caregivers know their children in ways no program can replicate. They understand their child’s history, interests, routines, culture, language, strengths, and needs.

The NAEYC guidance on culturally responsive practice encourages educators to learn about children and families, consider the child’s perspective, model empathy, and build positive relationships. For families, that should translate into respectful two-way communication rather than one-directional updates from school.

At its best, family partnership allows learning to travel in both directions: home experiences inform the classroom, and classroom insights help families support growth at home.


What About Families Who Homeschool?

Homeschooling and preschool do not have to be opposing choices. Families create many different educational paths. Some homeschool families may want a part-time or early-learning environment that provides peer interaction, guided play, enrichment, or support in specific areas. Others may use the principles of brain-based learning entirely at home.


The larger lesson from the podcast conversation is that parents should be equipped to ask thoughtful questions about any learning environment:

  • How are relationships built between children and educators?

  • How are movement, play, and conversation used throughout the day?

  • How does the program support language and emotional regulation?

  • How are children’s cultures, identities, and home experiences reflected?

  • How does the school communicate with and learn from families?

  • How do teachers observe individual progress and respond to different needs?

  • Are learning goals developmentally appropriate for the child’s age?


These questions help families look beyond a list of activities and examine the quality of the experiences children have each day.
